Photography Exhibit

Hey,
So my two photos are going to be on Exhibit June 7th! I'm so excited, but it's on a Thursday, so I wont be able to see my photos :( I'm still really happy that other people will be able to see it. If your in NYC you can check out the exhibit and if you wanna buy some pictures you can go to a silent auction. Too bad I wont be getting any money, haha. All the information is in the link below.

Purple Spring

Haven't posted a picture in a while... SAT's are coming up so I'm really busy.
ANYWAYS, here's another flower picture. I just have so many flowers in my backyard and every week there are new flowers that are blooming along with the different weather. I have no idea what kind of flower this is, like most flowers I take pictures of. But I really liked the color of this and it's a nice spring picture. Might as well enjoy these flower pictures because in the winter all you'll see are snow pictures (hopefully not..)

Music's Beauty

In this picture I actually used manual focus to get that "bokeh" effect. I took this in school for my graphic arts class. My group decided to go to the band room and I got this shot. I have no idea who's clarinet it is but I got a photo of it!!! It seems like the band room is where 70% of our pictures are... No comment. Not much to say, but I just wanted to show you guys a picture I took in school.

UPDATE: Photography Contest

Sooo... Some exciting news. The judges really liked my photos and wanted to publish it onto People magazine and to exhibit it in a show. I'm so amazed that anything even happened. I didn't really like the photos that much. But I just wanted to share this with you.

Photography Contest

Hey! So recently I entered a contest (or my mom...) This was my very first photography contest and I was pretty excited for this. I was pretty busy that week but I managed to put in 1-2 hours of shooting. So the contest was from Thomson Reuters (where my mom works) and it was for Asian Heritage Month, I believe. (Thomson Reuters is known for their photography) So this contest was open to all of the employees and the contest was to answer "What does it mean to be Asian in America" and my mom asked me to enter for her... of course. I wanted to go for a thought provoking image. Not just some fun, image appealing picture. After hours of shooting and setting up my room (boy was it messy...) I came up with these 2 pictures.

In this picture I wanted to really capture what it meant to be Asian in America in a very subtle way. The components are lightly hinted but there. I'm wearing a traditional Chinese dress and a pair of Converses (a classic American brand) I really wanted to incorporate the Asian and the American side of me. :)

This was the first idea that came to my mind when I read the contest thread. It was pretty obvious and straightforward, but still with different depths. I had to photoshop this picture quite some bit. I added in that American Flag (because I didn't have one on hand) and I had a lot of things that were stuck on my wall and I had to get that out. Underneath the flag you can see my poor editing skills, haha. I was cramming in for the deadline, and in actuality I submitted this picture 10 minutes late. I really liked the shadows that came from the bed posts as well. There's not much to say bout this besides me wearing a tradtional Chinese dress with a fan and Oriental bed and with an American flag in the background. Done.

A hidden treasure

Not exactly sure what flower this is... But if you know please comment below! I was at my mom's apartment and decided to go and take some pictures outside ( I just wanted that sunset...) It was freeezinng cold with wind that smacked you in the face. But I found these small flowers growing from the cracks of the rocks and I thought it was really beautiful. *SNAP*

Pear Blossoms

This picture is actually a bit old, it was when the Pear blossom just started to bloom. :) I was dangling from my balcony to take this picture (because I was too lazy to get my telephoto lens upstairs) But I managed to get this with a low f-stop to get a nice depth of field and with my kit lens. I didn't edit this photo yet. It's the "raw" form, haha pun.

A little about me...

Hey, welcome to my website!

This is my first post and I just wanted to tell you a bit about me. This site is to show my friends and family and everyone some of my "art" and to let them know that I'm using my money well, haha. Having this blog helps me relieve the stress that comes with the bundle package of high school. I really hope that you'll enjoy my photography and my small tips along the way ;)

Anddd.. If you wanna follow me on Instagram, my account is chlothephotopro. Pretty original, eh? Most of the pictures are taken by my iTouch but the more recent ones are taken with my Nikon.

Q&A

What kind of camera are you using for these pictures?

Well, some of my older pictures were taken by my little point and shoot Canon Powershot SD3500 IS (Digital Elph). I loved the camera, but since I wanted to pursue this hobby seriously I moved onto a DSLR; where I can be in control of my settings. So the DSLR that I have is a Nikon (yes.. I wish I had the Canon T2i) D3100. I've always (and still am) a Canon fan but I decided to go with the Nikon D3100, but if your debating if you should get the T2i or D3100 it really doesn't matter because they are close to the same. And I bought my DSLR with my own money (but then again all my money is from my parents...) and I got my Digital Elph as a Christmas gift.

How long have you've been taking pictures?

I really got interested in taking pictures in 2010 and I began to take pictures of things besides family photos and toursity shots. I realized that I had a real passion for taking pictures and experimenting with different angles, lighting, etc. I started off with my grandparent's Canon powershot and then I moved onto my SD3500 and onto the D3100.

Have you taken photography classes before?

Yes and No. I'm currently taking a Graphic Arts course in school and I love it so much. I've learned how to use Photoshop (FINALLY!) and how to develop film and use a old school film camera. It's just amazing and I would absolutely buy a film camera in the future. (Now to find a dark room..) And taking this class gives me an excuse to bring my camera to school and capture the moments of my years at high school. I'm also participating in my high school's Photography club and probably taking over Sophmore year with a friend of mine. We've taken pictures of the school plays for the school.  I've also applied for a position as the school's photography editor for the yearbook but instead I got the literary editor which is pretty awesome either way.  I also have some family friends who are professional wedding photographers (check them out at http://www.mattcheungphoto.com) and I love them to death. But they've allowed me to help (internship??) with their business because they'll be busy this summer. I'm also thinking about taking classes this summer.
